Starting a blog has, without a doubt, been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Through blogging, I’ve been introduced to interesting people, new ideas, expanded my knowledge and made money. I’ve done this a few times.
If you’re looking for a free and easy to follow step-by-step guide on how to start a blog, then you’ve come to the right place. Also, this guide is uniquely African. Why? Because this guide is from Africa and for Africa. Whether your African or a “foreigner” in Africa (which, by the way, makes you African at heart), then you will understand and appreciate that Africa is different (in a positive way), but also that there are some assumptions that the rest of the world makes … that just won’t make sense in Africa. That’s what we’re providing a uniquely African step-by-step “know how” guide to start a blog in 2019.

You’ll learn how to start a blog today in 10 easy steps that will take around 30 minutes to get setup and going. Are you ready to take the first step and take control of your destiny?
My first website was setup to provide my new business with a presence on the internet. However, I soon learnt the value of having an informal “conversation” with my clients - actual and prospective. Very soon, I was running a few websites - most of them blogs.
Blogging is fascinating. It gives you an opportunity to engage honestly with your audience. You can (and should) be professional, but blogging also gives you an opportunity to demonstrate you’re more creative side. Let’s be honest - Africa has a huge creative talent, and so much of it is still largely unknown to the world.
Why You Should Start a Uniquely African Blog
I’m passionate about Africa. I love Africa and I love her people. For me, there is so much on the positive side to blog about:
- Blog about travels in Africa
- African cuisine isn’t just tasty - it’s a cultural experience
- African art is raw, honest and simply … breathtaking
- Africa has untapped talent and opportunity - perfect for blogging
- Not to mention all the micro communities in Africa who all have a unique story to be told … with an African voice
Despite my passion, I’m also realistic. Africa has its problems. Corruption and poor governance are obvious examples. Africa also lags behind (in my opinion) on empowering woman and minority interest groups. Blogs are an opportunity to advance advocacy topics. Specifically in Africa, blogs can be used to speak up and speak out … and give others an opportunity to realise that they are not alone in their thoughts. Blogs give Africans a voice and a way of reaching out and connecting.
Blogging might be a simple hobby, but in Africa - blogging represents so much more. Blogging, much like Africa, represents hope and opportunity. And that is why there needs to be a uniquely Africa step-by-step guide for starting a blog.
Let’s be honest - Africa is also a poor continent. Yet, that doesn’t need to be the case. The internet has opened up a global community for Africa. We would challenge everyone to use a blog to communicate their knowledge and vision of Africa in a way that generates income - and empowers Africa (through blogging).
So, let’s tackle these steps. Are you ready to start a blog? In this post, we’re going to teach you everything you need to know (and provide you with quick access links) to start your own blog. Starting your own blog is your first major step towards making money from blogging, and unlocking financial freedom for yourself and your family.

Your blog’s name is the identity of your blog. I’ve gone through a number of thoughts on this matter, but unless you are an experienced blogger with strong technical knowledge, keep it simple and “universal”. Most blogs, if you want to appeal to an international audience, should have a .com domain name extension.
Fortunately, most African words are actually still available. Choose a word that is a “local flavour”, but use a .com.
If you want to have a .africa domain name, I’ll follow up with a post on how to achieve this.
Step 4: Choose a “Fit for Purpose” Blogging Platform (WordPress)
